# Why choose a health club

> What health clubs like Total Fitness and Virgin Active offer beyond the gym floor: pools, spa facilities, class timetables and family membership.

A health club sells more than a gym. Total Fitness, Virgin Active and their equivalents are built around the idea that you might swim, take a class, sit in a sauna and lift weights in the same visit — and that the membership should cover a household rather than a person.

## The pool changes what a membership is for

It is the single clearest dividing line between a health club and everything below it. A pool is expensive to build and expensive to run, which is why budget gyms and independents almost never have one.

If you swim, or you have been told to do low-impact work by a physio, or you want somewhere the children can learn — the pool is not an extra, it is the reason.

## Recovery facilities, used properly

Sauna, steam room and a decent changing area sound like luxuries until you have a routine that includes them. For people training hard several times a week, having somewhere to actually recover — rather than going straight from a heavy session into a car — is the part they say they would miss most.

## A real timetable, included

Health clubs typically run a broad class programme with the cost inside the membership rather than bolted on. If classes are how you train, the maths often works out better here than paying per session at a budget gym or a boutique studio.

## It works for a household

Family memberships, children's swimming, a café and somewhere to sit are the parts no budget gym attempts. If the gym needs to work for more than one person, this is the tier where that becomes straightforward.

## What you give up

- Price. Substantially more per month than a budget gym, and usually more than an independent.
- Commitment. Twelve-month terms are common, with off-peak options as the cheaper route.
- Hours. Staffed opening hours rather than 24/7, because pools and saunas need supervising.
- Specialist strength kit. The floor is usually good rather than deep; serious strength training is better served elsewhere.

## Who it suits

Swimmers. Families. People who want classes included rather than extra. Anyone whose training includes recovery as a scheduled part of it rather than an afterthought.

If the pool and the timetable are not things you would use, [a budget gym](/blog/why-choose-a-budget-gym) gives you the same floor for less, and [an independent](/blog/why-choose-an-independent-gym) gives you a better one. If you want this but at a higher specification, compare [premium clubs](/blog/why-choose-a-premium-gym).
