> A simple, beginner-friendly framework for planning your first gym workout — how to structure it, how long it should take, and how to progress from week to week.

Joining a gym is the easy part. Knowing what to actually do once you're inside is where most beginners get stuck. This is a simple framework you can use to plan a first workout that's effective without being overwhelming.

## Keep the structure simple

A solid beginner session has three parts:

- A short warm-up — five to ten minutes of light cardio to raise your heart rate and loosen up.
- The main work — a handful of exercises covering your major muscle groups.
- A cool-down — a few minutes of gentle movement and stretching.

## Cover the whole body

As a beginner, a full-body workout two or three times a week is more effective than isolating one area. Aim to include a push (like a chest press), a pull (like a row), a leg movement (like a leg press or squat), and something for your core. That's a complete, balanced session in four or five exercises.

## Start light and focus on form

Ego is the enemy of progress. Choose a weight you can control for the full range of motion, and prioritise good technique over heavy numbers. Good form now prevents injuries later and builds the foundation everything else is added to.

## Don't overstay

You don't need two hours. Thirty to forty-five focused minutes is plenty when you're starting out. A shorter session you repeat consistently beats a marathon workout you dread and skip.

## Progress gradually

Each week, aim to do a little more than the last — one extra rep, a slightly heavier weight, or one more set. This steady overload is what drives results, and tracking it keeps you motivated as the numbers climb.

Above all, be consistent. The best workout plan is the one you'll actually come back and do again.
