# How to find a workout in the app

> Where workouts live in MapYourGym: your gym's own sessions, multi-week programmes, and the ones you save. A walkthrough of the Workouts tab.

The hardest part of a gym session is often deciding what to do. MapYourGym gives you four ways in, and they all sit behind the Workouts tab. This is a tour of what each one is for.

This is the first of a series on using the app. The others cover [building your own workout](/blog/how-to-build-your-own-workout), [logging a session as you train](/blog/how-to-log-a-workout), [finding the kit](/blog/how-to-find-equipment-in-your-gym), [tracking your progress](/blog/how-to-track-your-progress) and [your gym's page in the app](/blog/how-to-use-the-my-gym-tab).

## The Workouts tab

Open the Workouts tab and the first thing you see is the week, with today circled. If your gym has scheduled something for you, or you are partway through a programme, it appears here. If not, it says so and points you at the four big buttons below.

- My Workouts - sessions you have built yourself, and anything you have saved.
- MYG Workouts - written by your gym, for the kit your gym actually has.
- Programmes - multi-week plans that run in a set order.
- Exercise Library - every exercise, if you would rather browse than follow a plan.

## MYG Workouts: sessions from your gym

These are written by your gym's coaches against the equipment on their floor, which is the thing a generic workout off the internet cannot do. A session that calls for a machine your gym does not own is a session you have to improvise halfway through.

Each one shows its star rating and how many members have rated it, so you can see what actually lands with people who train where you train. Tap the heart to save one to your favourites.

_Ratings come from members of your own gym, not from the internet at large._

## Before you start

Tapping a workout opens its summary: how many exercises, how many sets, and a rough estimate of how long it will take. Underneath is the exercise list with the sets and rep range for each one.

Two things here are worth knowing about. The arrows beside each exercise set the order you will see them in, so if you always do dips before squats you can say so once and the app remembers. And Previous notes brings back anything you wrote the last time you did this session, which is where you find out what you told yourself about the weight being too light.

Rate a workout after you have done it and the score joins everyone else's, which is how the good sessions rise to the top of the list. Tap the heart and it is in your favourites for next time.

_Rating takes a second and makes the list better for everyone at your gym._

## Programmes: when you want a plan, not a session

A programme is several workouts in a deliberate order - a push, pull and legs split, say - rather than a single session. Open one and you see the workouts it contains and how it runs. Some are self-paced, so you train when you can rather than to a fixed calendar.

Tap Start programme and today's session appears on your home screen each time you open the app, so you stop having to decide.

## And if none of it fits

Build your own. It takes a couple of minutes and the app knows what your gym has, so you are picking from kit you can actually walk up to. That is the [next post in this series](/blog/how-to-build-your-own-workout).
