# How to build your own workout

> Build a workout in MapYourGym: add exercises, set your reps and rest, and turn two movements into a superset or a circuit. A step-by-step walkthrough.

Sometimes you know exactly what you want to do and no ready-made session quite matches it. Building your own takes about two minutes, and once it is saved you can run it again any time without thinking about it.

Start at Workouts, then My Workouts, then New in the top corner. Part of a series: see also [finding a workout](/blog/how-to-find-a-workout) and [logging one as you train](/blog/how-to-log-a-workout).

## Name it, then add exercises

Give it a name you will recognise in three weeks. Push Day A beats Workout 2.

Underneath is the full exercise list with a search box. Type a few letters or scroll, then tap the plus beside anything you want. Each exercise shows the muscle it works, so you can sanity-check the balance as you go.

_Search or scroll. The plus adds an exercise to your list._

## Sets, reps and rest

Every exercise you add arrives already filled in: three sets, eight to twelve reps, ninety seconds of rest. Those numbers are a starting point so you can get going quickly, not a recommendation. Tap any of them to change it.

The arrows move an exercise up or down the running order, and the bin removes it. Nothing here is permanent: you can edit the whole thing later.

## Supersets and circuits

Look at the small link between two exercises: Tap to superset. That is how you pair them.

A superset means you move straight from one exercise to the next with no rest, then rest once at the end of the round. The app then asks for a round count and the rest between rounds, and stops asking how many sets each exercise gets, because in a superset you count rounds instead of sets.

If you would rather run three or more exercises in sequence with a short breather between each, tap Switch to circuit. Same block, different rest pattern. And if you change your mind, Supersetted - tap to split puts them back to being separate exercises.

_In a superset you count rounds instead of sets, so the sets box disappears._

## Save it

Tap Save and it lands in My Workouts alongside anything you have favourited. Open it and you get the same summary as any other workout: exercises, sets, an estimate of how long it will take, and a Start workout button at the bottom.

![The saved Demo workout summary, showing 3 exercises, 9 sets, about 16 minutes, the superset listed as one block of two exercises, and a Start workout button.](https://www.mapyourgym.co.uk/screens/build/05-ready-to-start.png)

_The superset shows as a single block of two exercises for three rounds._

From here it behaves exactly like a workout your gym wrote, which means [the workout player](/blog/how-to-log-a-workout) handles it the same way.
