# Gym etiquette 101: the unwritten rules for beginners

> The unwritten rules every gym-goer follows — re-racking weights, wiping down equipment, sharing machines and more. A simple etiquette guide for beginners.

Beyond knowing how to use the equipment, feeling at home in a gym means understanding its unwritten rules. None of them are complicated, and everyone appreciates a member who follows them. Here's what you need to know.

## Re-rack your weights

When you've finished with dumbbells, plates or a barbell, return them to where you found them. It keeps the floor safe and tidy, and means the next person isn't hunting for the weight you left behind.

## Wipe down equipment after use

Most gyms provide spray and paper towels or wipes. Giving a bench or machine a quick wipe after you've used it is simple courtesy — and it's the number one thing other members notice.

## Share equipment and let people work in

During busy periods, it's normal to "work in" — taking turns on a machine between someone else's sets. If someone asks, say yes where you can. Avoid sitting on a machine scrolling your phone between long rests when others are waiting.

## Mind your space

Keep bags and coats in the lockers rather than on the gym floor, don't stand right in front of the dumbbell rack while you train, and avoid dropping weights unnecessarily. A little awareness of the people around you goes a long way.

## Don't be afraid to ask

If you're ever unsure whether someone is using a bench or how long they'll be, just ask. A friendly question is always better than guessing — and it's exactly how the regulars around you learned too.
